Focusing on the Calendar, it seems to me, is both Pharisaical and dangerous. It was the Pharisees of Jesus' day who majored in such things... how many steps could be taken on the Sabbath, how strictly the dietary laws and the cleansing rites were to be observed. Splinter groups like the ROCOR tend to adopt a rigorist mindset towards rules and regulations (i.e. we must burn olive oil in our lampadas for burning was votive candles is not sacrificial and is a western innovation). You will also discover that your baptism is viewed with suspicion. The fact is, most ROCOR parishes would insist upon baptizing you before admitting you to communion since they would view your baptism as invalid...the baptism of heretics. Such is NOT the case with all New Calendar churches and all canonical Old Calendar churches.

Let me share with you a personal story.

I had a friend who was raised as a Roman Catholic. He became disenchanted with Roman Catholicism early on and converted to the Orthodox Church (ROCOR). After a few years he met his present wife (a lapsed Roman Catholic) and they married and started attending a Protestant church (Pentecostal, I believe). After many years he again longed for Orthodoxy and ultimately re-entered the Church through a New Calendar jurisdiction which welcomed him home with open arms (something the ROCOR would not do). He should have been content with once again being Orthodox and praying for his family. But no... after a period of time he began obsessing with calendar, beards, women's periods, head coverings... the LAW! He left our church for the ROCOR and spent the next few years tearing New Calendar churches apart. His wife and family? She eventually left him. She was sick of his attempts at turning himself into a 19th century Russian Pharisee. Today he is a lonely man AND I might add... a man who has now left the ROCOR and embraces NOTHING but his own disillusionment.

I've seen this before with others. Be forewarned and be extremely careful what you read and choose to believe. If you believe the Lord is calling you to the Orthodox Church... embrace Her in Her full communion and not some splinter group sinfully separated from the Body of Christ.
