These hurdles you mention were also barriers for me... some 13 years ago. I spent the first 44 years as an Evangelical Christian. At 19 years of age I went off to bible school on a 4 year B Th. I was a member of Christian Businessmen, Navigators, looking to go on staff with Campus Crusade... in other words, I was more than a nominal Christian.
The scandal of tens of thousands of Protestant denominations, each "rightly dividing the Word of Truth by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit" and yet coming up with diametrically opposite interpretations, kicked out from under me some of the support pins. Then there was the worship committees on which I served. We were constantly re-inventing the proverbial wheel as it were... but always falling short. Somehow, choruses... special musical numbers... more intimate communion services all fell short. Worship, as A.W.Tozer once said, was still the missing gem in the crown of Evangelical Christianity. Another pin was kicked out.
And there is so much more.... constant revivals that simply lead to a roller coaster spiritual experience.. one in which it became abundantly clear that I did NOT have consistent victory in leading the Christian life with any degree of success. Sin shall not have dominion over you, said St Paul, but it most certainly did.
I've written about this in a little website found here:

I invite you to spend some time reading my little site and checking out the links. Actually there are a number of excellent sites that I've not included in my link page such as:
