Babtism, in the Orthodox's view,( or at least what I've been taught) is the way a person enters into the life of the church. It is not magic and it does not guarentee that you go to heaven. Orthodoxy is sacremental, we are saved by participating in the life of Jesus Christ. This life, is given freely and in its fullness in the sacrements of the church. Buried with Him in Babtism, we are raised to newness of life. Those who have been babtised into Christ have put on Christ. I suggest that you read what the early church fathers wrote about babtism, and then go and do a word study on babtism in the bible. I am a recent convert to Orthodoxy, the two issues that were most compelling to me were babtism and the eurchirist. Read the fathers and then read what the bible says, I don't think that you will see any contridictions between the two.
